Some advice to the younger professional self
If you want to work hard, it’s better to prioritize your own growth and passion over your job. Learn something, help a non-profit, etc. If this aligns with your job then that’s great.
Set expectations. Then try exceeding them.
This might be contrarian. However, the negative consequences of burning bridges are exaggerated. Do it when you have to do it.
Prioritize being helpful over being nice.
Be kind with your actions and words.
Be humble. You learn more this way.
Say it when you don’t know something. This requires and thus conveys confidence and humility.
If you find yourself in a new culture/environment there is no rush to fit in. You will make up for it eventually.
Pursue a growth mindset and play the long game.
Know that mental health is important. Take care of yourself. Being disciplined helps.
Manage up. A good manager appreciates that.
Make decisions with purpose and integrity.
Don’t mind a challenge.
Read. Listen to podcasts.
Don’t stress. Have fun. Have an impact; small or big.
